Requirements

  • College level courses in math, technical drafting, computer assisted drafting and/or science may be required. No experience is generally required with the applicable college courses or equivalent training, or if accepted into an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in a related technical field.
  • Must have completed 60 hours towards a civil engineering, or relevant degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship (Summer 2024).
  • SPECIAL SKILLS:
  • Math skills to perform simple calculations; willingness to learn.
  • Basic computer skills required to enter data into spreadsheets or databases.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to walk long distances, climb ladders, stoop, squat and crawl to inspect work; ability to observe construction activities and distinguish colors; and ability to perceive back-up alarms and other warnings.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions, subject to insects, flooded terrain, equipment/traffic, and other hazards.
  • Position may require nonstandard work shifts, such as long hours, weekends, or nights as per client and/or manager’s direction.
  • Position may require driving company vehicle. Incumbent must have valid driver's license and a driving record that meets company policy.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, observes the work of contractors involved in the construction of projects and performs quality assurance (QA) activities.
  • Performs non-manual field work that involves applying acquired knowledge and experience to observe moderately complex construction contracts and related activities.
  • Acts as Owner’s Representative for State, Federal, or local clients, where most projects are roadway-related (horizontal) – asphalt paving, bridges, concrete paving, signing/striping, guard rail, traffic signals, etc.
  • Must have good computer skills and be able to utilize standard office software.
  • Coordinate with field lead / internal project manager and/or owner on assigned tasks.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to review contract documents, project plans, project specifications, and progress reports.
  • Records and documents construction activities in accordance with contract requirements, such as: daily diaries, daily payment reports during progress of work, and others as assigned.
  • Participates in internal quality control checks, maintaining quality standards in all work produced, checking computations, and/or reviewing designs and drawings performed by others.
  • Performs other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
