Requirements

  • Engineering Students: Undergrad students must maintain a 2.5 GPA throughout the internship.
  • Candidates must be:
  • Enrolled in an accredited certificate, 2-year or 4-year program during their internship.
  • Enrolled in an engineering academic program in Civil, Water Resources, Structural, Geotechnical, Geology, Mechanical or other related field.
  • You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
  • Curiosity and passion for learning
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing information, identifying client needs, developing action plans, identifying deliverables, and presenting results
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MathCAD
  • Strong communication skills
  • Coursework completion in statics and dynamics, soil mechanics, engineering hydrology, engineering hydraulics, strength of materials, and/or structural engineering

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the dam safety staff in performing their work on various projects;
  • Preparing Emergency Action Plan and Public Safety Plan documents under the direction of a dam safety engineer;
  • Producing discreet work products primarily attributable to the intern’s knowledge and abilities;
  • Assisting with monitoring and surveillance manual readings and data collection at City Light dams including data collection and reduction;
  • Participating in structural and geologic inspections.
  • Learning Objectives Include:
  • Preparing detailed records of field inspections by assisting other engineers, technicians, and project managers in the preparation of finals plans, specifications, special conditions, and agreements for the Dam Safety Program;
  • Being familiar with or capable of using fall-restraint devices such as full-body harness and retention devices to perform inspections;
  • Be responsible for gathering and analyzing daily and monthly project data related to dam inspections and tests;
  • Demonstrating ability to follow Seattle City Light safety protocols and safe work practices.
