<ul><li>On our steps toward inhabiting the moon and Mars long-term, dexterous robotics have a key role to play in habitation site preparation, logistics, maintenance, conducting science during uncrewed periods, and partnering with humans during operations to extend human productivity.</li><li>These robots&nbsp;may&nbsp;be used in orbiting platforms, and/or in surface habitation outposts. A key technology need for these future missions is increased autonomy. The robots NASA currently utilizes in human exploration are very time intensive for both astronauts and ground operators. These systems consist largely of scripted motion or use direct human control. As humans venture farther from earth the real-time communication delays and crew resource limitations require systems that can operate more independently than current robots.</li><li>Toward that goal the Robotics Technology Development Branch at the NASA Johnson Space Center is developing the technology that will enable those future systems. The Dexterous Robotics team works to leverage existing commercial technology and fund external research, to develop new robotic capabilities that can sense the world as it moves through it, detect and localize objects, and interact with those objects in its environment.</li></ul>
