Requirements

  • Strong candidates will have portfolios that demonstrate a talent in narrative and visual storytelling using typography, photography, illustration and page architecture.
  • The fellow should be a creative problem-solver and quick learner with an interest in journalism across all subject matters. The successful candidate will be able to communicate and collaborate well with editors, photo editors and fellow designers.
  • This program is for early-career journalists. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who have had multiple news internships or equivalent experience.
  • To apply, upload a résumé and cover letter, packaged in that order and uploaded as one single .pdf or .doc file that is under 5 MB in size. Visual candidates should also include a link to a portfolio of their work. The application will prompt candidates when to upload materials. The application also will ask candidates to provide a link to their portfolios. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.

Responsibilities

  • The Times is a recognized leader in print design and has been named World’s Best Designed Newspaper multiple times by the Society for News Design. The fellow will work with art directors and designers across news and feature sections to craft engaging layouts, reimagining digital-first content for a print audience.
