Requirements

  • Essential:
  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course
  • Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2024
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • Predicted grades corresponding to a 2:1 or higher
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently
  • Enthusiastic about lasers
  • Effective communication skills
  • Works well in a team
  • Responsible approach to health and safety
  • Desirable:
  • Experience working in a laboratory
  • Experience with lasers / optics
  • Experience using computer software to model or control systems
  • Experience with data analysis

Responsibilities

  • This industrial placement is with a small and diverse team. You will be working directly with CALTA scientists and CLF engineers and will be involved in a variety of different activities such as:
  • Leading your own assigned project, under the guidance of a Technical Manager, where you will have direct influence over the outcomes;
  • Supporting world-renowned scientists and playing an active role in innovative experiments by helping to identify and solve problems as they occur;
  • Developing techniques to improve DiPOLE lasers for safe operation at higher energies and repetition rates, both on your own and as part of a team;
  • Learning how to operate lasers; cryogenic systems; and vacuum systems in a clean room environment;
  • Learning and developing computer modelling software skills;
  • Running experiments, analysing data and reporting your findings to the team, and other placement students, via written reports and presentations;
  • Networking by attending local conferences and collaborating with other departments within CLF.
