The candidate must be an enrolled undergraduate student eligible for an industrial placement, able to work in the UK, with predicted 2:1 grades. They should possess problem-solving and time management skills, demonstrate enthusiasm for lasers and excellent communication abilities, and have experience in laboratories, lasers/optics, computer software, and data analysis.

The High-Energy Laser Scientist – Industrial Placement will take on a leading role in assigned projects, support scientists in experiments, improve laser systems, learn and develop software skills, run experiments, and collaborate with other departments within the organization.

<ul><li>Would you like to join a world record-setting team, working at the cutting edge of laser science?</li><li>We are the Centre for Advanced Laser Technology and Applications, the research and development arm of STFC’s Central Laser Facility (CLF). We developed the record-breaking, high-energy laser amplifier technology known as DiPOLE. Using DiPOLE technology, we designed and built the world’s first kilowatt-level, high-energy, diode-pumped solid-state laser producing pulses in excess of 100 J at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. We have now built four DiPOLE lasers, operating at increasingly high repetition rates and pulse energies, and have installed them in world-leading European research facilities.</li><li>The first prototype DiPOLE laser we built is housed in our labs at the CLF. It operates at the 10 J, 10 Hz level and is a valuable experimental platform to test new technologies for developing our lasers and exploring new applications for DiPOLE lasers. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to be involved in projects using the DiPOLE prototype laser as well as leading their own unique research project that will directly contribute to both existing and future DiPOLE lasers.</li><li>Research projects typically involve the development of new optical setups, integration of automated components and testing and installation of new components into DiPOLE lasers.
