Requirements

  • Education / Qualifications:
  • Current undergraduate student on physics, natural science or engineering degree course, ideally in second or third year
  • Experience/ Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with how to access and read data from academic journals ideally physics related
  • Basic knowledge of how physical materials properties, including superconductivity, vary with temperature and magnetic field
  • Practical experience of carrying out laboratory experiments, ideally physics including the use of magnetic fields and/or cryogens
  • Familiarity with spreadsheet and word processing software for simple data analysis and reporting, ideally MS Excel and MS Word
  • Skills/ Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate and work collaboratively within a team
  • Ability to work independently on defined tasks to set deadlines, but willingness to seek clarification if in doubt
  • Ability to analyse physical materials data
  • Ability to understand and follow practical instructions safely and methodically
  • Ability to document processes undertaken and present results

Responsibilities

  • Locating up-to-date academic reference papers as sources for relevant materials data
  • Identifying and processing up-to-date materials data from superconducting wire suppliers for use in quench models
  • Collating materials data in a format suitable for inclusion in existing quench models
  • Checking updated materials data and comparing against existing data sets
  • Assisting Development Engineers with experimental testing of magnet development prototypes
  • Involvement with analysis of experimental data
  • Working collaboratively with other team members, especially Senior Development Engineers and Scientific Programmer
  • Maintaining confidentiality of company proprietary software, hardware, designs and processes
