Requirements

  • Essential:
  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course
  • Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2024
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrate good team working capabilities
  • Willingness to learn new skills, both technical and non-technical
  • Open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned to them
  • Excellent knowledge of at least one programming language such as Java/C#, Python, JavaScript or similar
  • Desirable:
  • Good knowledge of software engineering methodologies
  • Good knowledge of version control systems (e.g. git)
  • Good knowledge of relational and/or noSQL databases
  • Good knowledge of web development technologies or frameworks (e.g. React)
  • Good knowledge of automation techniques (e.g. continuous integration, ansible)

Responsibilities

  • Some of the tasks will revolve around software development and related activities, with the support from members of the group and receiving training as required, such as:
  • Gain familiarity with existing software solutions
  • Engage with stakeholders to determine requirements
  • Contribute to software development tasks applying standard processes (e.g. version control, unit and end-to-end testing, continuous integration, coding conventions)
  • Contribute to systems deployment and operational tasks
  • Contribute to system design and architecture discussions
  • Investigate solutions for specific problems and/or features
  • Contribute to installation and deployment tasks as needed.
  • The placement may also involve contributions to the preparation and delivery of technical training workshops.
