Requirements

  • A current 2nd, 3rd or penultimate year University of Edinburgh undergraduate student
  • Knowledge of common chemistry laboratory activities.
  • Interest in safety and sustainability issues.
  • Good communication and team working skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Desirable:
  • Currently studying Chemistry, Materials Science or a closely related discipline
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and content platforms (e.g. Sharepoint & Confluence).
  • Experience recording video tutorials.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a variety of new safety resources (e.g. best practice videos & posters; digests of lessons-learned from accidents/incidents; brief guidance notes) in a style and format anticipated to have best impact and usefulness, to further enhance Chemistry Hub and the School’s Chemistry Safety Information Resource (https://www.wiki.ed.ac.uk/display/ChemSafe/Chemistry+Safety), as part of the implementation of a new Safety Strategy being developed for the School during 2023-24 (60%).
  • Develop a variety of sustainability resources (e.g. prospective experiments for UG teaching labs based on sustainable use of reagents, energy, consumables; posters; SOPs and information notes) as part of the School’s sustainability activities in Curriculum Transformation and the 2023-2027 School Plan (40%).
  • This will involve research and review of examples from recognised sources as well as creative development de novo, based on feedback gathered from a cross-section of the School (e.g. through the Safety Committee, other students & researchers etc).
