Requirements

  • Required Technical Skills:
  • Basic familiarity with Python is required and should be possessed at a data analyst level. The intern will not be writing software applications, but the SDMS team uses Python to perform EDA and automate testing and analytics functions.
  • Additionally, SQL is a requirement. The intern should be comfortable writing basic SQL queries and doing joins on multiple tables. The expectation would be that the intern understands SQL and databases to the point where they can explore a database and write queries against it with minimal assistance.
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Attention to detail and experience solving complex problems would be the best soft skills for this role. The projects SDMS is involved in center around large volumes of data and a large number of individual datasets. Keeping organized and paying close attention to detail are key to being able to understand individual datasets and uncovering the relationships between datasets.
  • If a student is majoring in finance/economics, comfortability with large data sets (often too large for Excel) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • The intern will be assisting with multiple projects owned by the Securities Data Management Service (SDMS). The SDMS team is responsible for data management of 3rd-party vendor data. The main project the intern would assist with is the ingestion and modeling of 3rd-party vendor data for fixed-income securities.
  • Given a package of datasets, the intern will be required to develop a deep understanding of the individual datasets as well as the relationships between data sets. Users and use cases will need to be developed to assist in the design of a data model for the package. This project will involve exploratory data analysis (EDA), presentation of findings, data documentation, and application testing.
