Requirements

  • Basic Qualifications:
  • Amgen requires that all individuals applying for an undergrad internship or a co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:
  • 18 years or older
  • Currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s Degree program from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent
  • Completion of one year of study from an accredited college or university prior to the internship commencing
  • Enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s degree program following the potential internship or co-op assignment with an accredited college or university
  • Must not be employed at the time the internship starts
  • Student must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship OR co-op
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree concentration(s) in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field
  • At least 1-2 years of lab experience (lab courses are applicable)
  • Strong basic lab skills and ability to conduct research (experience in chromatographic purification, reaction optimization, and data analysis)
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • Some experience with writing organic reaction mechanisms

Responsibilities

  • Each summer intern will be placed on a diverse team of Ph.D. level scientists and assigned a novel project that would have an impact on the scientific community
  • The intern will learn valuable procedures that enable them to work in a chemistry lab safely
  • Bench chemistry in learning the application of multi-step organic synthetic sequences to construct target molecules
  • Gain proficiency in the purification of reaction products utilizing crystallization or chromatography and product characterization using HPLC-MS, NMR and other methods as needed
  • Maintain accurate records of experiments, observations, and results using an electronic laboratory notebook.
  • Expand reaction knowledge by searching the chemical literature for pertinent information
  • The intern will have regular meetings with their supervisor to better understand the goals of the project and troubleshoot issues that arise during research
  • Independently explore the limitations and potential applications of their project
  • At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will present their work to the department
