Responsibilities

  • Biomedical Scientists are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and monitoring of drug therapy by the application of automated, semi-automated and manual analytical techniques.
  • Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, biological fluids and renal and gall stones. Investigations include for example, liver, bone and endocrine function tests, sweat tests, therapeutic drug and diabetes monitoring and tumour marker tests.
  • As a Biomedical Scientist the post holder will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a clinical technical service that will achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care.
  • They will be expected to work as part of a team on a rotational basis in all of the diagnostic sections of the laboratory performing the work to the required standards.
  • The department is divided into Automation and Immunoassay, Special Assay, Reception and Separation sections with each section being organised and managed by a Section leader.
  • The post holder will rotate through the various sections whilst maintaining an up to date knowledge of Clinical Chemistry and current working practices within the diagnostic laboratory.
  • Following a satisfactory competency assessment, the post holder will be contactable on an emergency telephone line and work autonomously to provide an out of hours analytical Clinical Chemistry service for the Trust.
