As such, we are looking for the following general qualifications, skills, and attributes in you:
  • A minimum 2.1 Bachelor's degree or higher degree in Environmental or Social Sciences, Geography, Environmental Engineering, Environmental or Social Studies;
  • enthusiasm for a career in environmental Consulting, underpinned by a knowledge and deep interest in the built and natural environment;
  • general understanding of and interest in impact assessments in the UK;
  • adaptability and versatility to work across and with many environmental, social and design disciplines and changing priorities;
  • good planning and organisational skills;
  • ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally, adapting your approach to suit the audience;
  • strong reasoning and analytical skills;
  • demonstrate initiative and a creative approach to problem solving;
  • the aptitude to work on your own initiative whilst being aware of own limits and knowing when to seek guidance;
  • recognise the importance of client care including internal Arup clients, and your role in contributing towards it;
  • able to work effectively as part of a team being respectful of the views and needs of others coupled with a willingness to re-prioritise activities when needed;
  • possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; and,
  • interest and ability in digital techniques such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software, InDesign etc. would be an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • During your time in the Environmental Assessments team, your day-to-day responsibilities as consultant could include the following:
  • Contributing towards assessment and improvement of environmental and social impacts of buildings, infrastructure and policy;
  • Supporting project kick-off by helping to figure out how to deliver a project or report;
  • Coordinating environmental and social specialists to input into projects;
  • Supporting project managers including organising meetings, helping prepare agendas take meeting minutes and follow up on actions;
  • Undertaking site visits;
  • Data analysis;
  • Supporting in the delivery of projects including reviewing and managing budgets, overseeing progress, and identifying risks;
  • Communicating information upward to clients and collaborators and downward to project teams;
  • Preparation of clear, well structured, logical and concise reports;
  • Summarising key messages from specialist inputs into non-technical communications
  • Assisting with preparation of bids and tenders as well as preparation of marketing material; and,
  • Planning your workload so that you can deliver on time or ahead of target.
  • During the periods of rotation within other teams, your day-to-day responsibilities will vary and could include the following:
  • Assisting in the design and undertaking of surveys and site investigations;
  • Coordinating environmental specialists to input into projects;
  • Data analysis of survey results;
  • Reviewing environmental and historical information and preparing reports;
  • Data analysis of survey results; and,
  • Contributing towards impact assessments and other technical reports.
