Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program.
  • Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
  • If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)
  • RPNs with Active or Eligible Registration with CRPNA College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta welcome to apply.
  • 4 months of Addiction and Mental Health experience within the last 3 years.
  • New grads who have completed a final preceptorship in an Addiction and Mental Health site may be considered.
  • Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques required.
  • Working knowledge of Psychotropic medications required.
  • Experience in AMH assessment tools including but not limited to the Mental Status Examination.
  • Experience in various risk assessments: i.e., Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, Violence risk.
  • Training and experience in therapeutic modalities such as Trauma Informed Care, CBT, DBT and/or other evidence-based modalities.
  • Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) preferred.
  • Nursing experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health related resources across the Calgary Zone preferred.
  • Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act.
  • Experience in various risk assessment i.e. Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, violent risk.

Responsibilities

  • As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families.
  • You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance.
  • You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
  • You would be covering predictable relief needs such as sick time, leave of absences, education, vacation, and personal leave.
  • As an RN you work as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team in the in-patient acute psychiatric nursing unit collaborating on the delivery of holistic, comprehensive care to meet the needs of individuals, families and communities.
  • You provide excellence in nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care developing strong skills in mental status assessment, de-escalation, and conflict resolution.
  • The opportunity to be a strong advocate for the patient is an integral role as you will facilitate the appeal process for patient certification as well as speaking to the patient’s level of functioning in front of an AMH review panel board.
  • You will develop your group facilitation skills as all nursing staff within AMH are responsible for facilitating and delivering group content to the patients.
